Standard VI: External Development Leadership

I believe an external leader is one that creates an open school environment of acceptance and an environment that expects students, parents and community leaders to be actively involved in all aspects of the educational process. An external leader should be working in partnership with valuable stakeholders to maintain the school’s core values, beliefs and mission in every decision made. The school leader should establish procedures in which legal mandates are explained in a forum conducive to the different learning style of the stakeholders involved, providing access for all. A variety of opportunities should be created and advertised giving students, parents and community members multiple openings to participate in the educational process. An external leader should be transparent.

Select Artifacts
College Campus Tour: I was able to reach out to Wesleyan College and Nash Community College to plan campus visits and tours for all of our students. The purpose was to expose our students to the variety of local college options. Our goal was that our students would begin to see themselves as future college students. Through this experience, I have learned that our local stakeholders and institutes of higher education do have a desire to partner with local schools, but are often unsure of how to connect initially. Both colleges were excited that we contacted them and went out of their way to plan excellent campus tours and informational sessions. In reflection, I believe it is important to establish open lines of communication and clear paths of involvement with our community stakeholders.

College Campus Tour Feedback: Feedback email from Wil Van der Meulen, Associate Dean of the Office of Student & Enrollment Services at Nash Community College.

Community Internship: During the summer of 2012 I completed a community internship with The Miracle League of Franklin County. This community internship allowed me the opportunity to see how a passionate group of community members are working to impact the same students we serve as school employees. Through this experience, I realized how valuable our community members can be, and that they are highly invested in the success of the public schools in their neighborhoods as well. Learn more about this internship experience, here.
